Yisd Calendar 2023 24 – EL PASO, TX () – Parkland Elementary School teacher Alexandria Sapien and Young Women’s Leadership Academy teacher Amy K. Smith have been named the 2022-2023 Ysleta ISD Elementary and Middle School Teachers of the Year.
In addition, Marisela Bustillos of Ysleta ISD headquarters was named the 2022-2023 Support Worker of the Year.

Sapien, a kindergarten teacher at an elementary school in Parkland, says she was inspired to pursue a career in education after working part-time at a day care center during college.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t feel love through the words and actions of my students,” she said, adding that her goal is to become an animal-assisted therapist and continue working with children and youth in a variety of settings. .

A music teacher at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, Smith has been an educator for 23 years in Tennessee, Indiana and El Paso. She also works as a part-time music therapist helping people with disabilities in the El Paso area.

Sandra Kneeskern (Parkland HS), Nallely Mendez (Ysleta MS), Dana Molden (Eastwood HS) and Andrea Rios (Riverside MS) were other finalists for Middle School Teacher of the Year.

Bustillos, who has worked for the district for 11 years, is currently the senior administrative assistant in the Office of Human Capital Management. Ysleta ISD has played a big role in her life – she attended regional schools at a young age, started working at headquarters her senior year at Bel Air High School, and her children will begin attending our schools next year.
Bustillos prides herself on keeping a positive attitude and making sure she’s always involved and helping out with whatever event is going on in her department — “I know my colleagues know I’m always as helpful as I can be,” he said .
