As a land grant institution, the University of Illinois has a special responsibility to recognize the peoples of these lands, as well as the history of dispossession that has allowed this institution to grow over the past 150 years. We also need to think about these histories and actively discuss them and the part this university played in shaping them. This recognition and centralization of indigenous peoples is the beginning of our progress over the next 150 years.
