The Faculty Senate Executive Committee voted unanimously Wednesday to support a resolution that would extend the two-day break over Indigenous Peoples Day weekend for the 2023-24 academic year.

The resolution, recommended by the Committee on Academic Policy and Evaluation, would also designate June 11 as a university holiday, ensure that the start of the weekend does not coincide with spring final exams and adjust the start dates for the summer semester, spring and the winter.
The resolution will be considered by the full Faculty Senate at their meeting on November 15. The final decision will be made on December 15 during a special session of the Senate.
Tuesday’s unanimous vote was the culmination of more than a year of debate over the recess. The Faculty Senate’s executive committee held a “good and robust discussion” about whether to cancel classes for Indigenous Peoples Day last October, according to meeting minutes. The measure was voted down, according to Joan Song McLaughlin, chair of the Committee on Academic Policy and Assessment.

McLaughlin, who appeared before the executive in favor of extending fall break on Tuesday, also worked to propose a temporary fall break last semester. Last fall’s proposal would add a two-day break to the academic calendar and extend the 2022 fall term to Dec. 22, which some teachers felt was too late.
“Some professors were against it being too late to try, but so it was temporary,” McLaughlin said in an interview with
. “This new proposal would start the summer semester earlier [in the next few years], so that the last day of classes is no later than December 20.

Several faculty members raised questions about the potential loss of class time during the short fall and winter semesters.
McLaughlin agreed with their argument, but said the benefits — including a longer summer for students pursuing internships or learning experiences, recognition of the university’s diversity during Indigenous Peoples Day and June 16th, and breaks that will mesh well with those of K-12 schools. , making child care easy for college—overcame the limitations.
“Whenever we make any change, there are people for whom it will have a negative effect and for others it will have a positive effect,” McLaughlin said. “Our task is to propose a calendar that works for many people. The Committee on Academic Policy and Rankings also found that many UB institutions and other members of the Association of American Universities already have a break in place.
“The work that has been done is a perfect example of how the Senate committee works. They were presented with some requests and some ideas that needed to be addressed by doing a great job,” said Senate President Frederic Stoss. “This went through the whole process from issues being presented to a committee that did a lot of work — to the point where we voted to support the faculty committee.”

“I fully support the recommendation of the Committee on Academic Policy and Assessment to modify the UB academic calendar to include a two-day holiday,” Weber said in a statement. “While no calendar is perfect, I believe the proposal before the faculty senate represents the right balance of the many needs of the campus.”
The academic calendar for summer 2022 has only four days off: September 5 for Labor Day and November 23-25 for Thanksgiving.
The Faculty Senate voted for the first time to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day, which will be celebrated on the second Monday in October, during the fall 2021 semester.
