Nova Public Schools Mull Over Closing On Minority Holidays

The budget provides $61 million to provide teachers and staff with a 4.2 percent cost-of-living adjustment and one-step raise, resulting in In a 7 percent average salary increase for most employees.
“We began our budget process with a commitment to align with the priorities and outcomes outlined in this year’s launch of PWCS Vision 2025, the strategic plan for development,” said Superintendent McDade. “As a result, I am pleased to share that the CEO’s budget for fiscal year 2023 includes significant investments to support our classrooms and students.”
The budget includes an additional $20 million for market-based improvements to pay balance for certified/instructional and classified employees. As a result of these adjustments, PWCS salaries will be more competitive. These increases are primarily aimed at the early and mid-career stages of our scale, where PWCS has the least parity with other school divisions competing for talent. Thus, some teaching and certified staff will receive raises above 7 percent.

As the population grew and became more diverse, public school systems in Northern Virginia began to accept holidays from minority religious and ethnic groups.
The last one is Prince William County. On Nov. 4, its school board voted to add four religious holidays to the 2021-2022 academic calendar: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr and Diwali, celebrated by Hindus, Jains. and six. . Several other school districts in Northern Virginia are considering similar changes.
Because of the growing population of these groups in Northern Virginia, it is necessary to add vacations to the school calendar, said Gila Franklin Siegel, associate director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington.

According to a demographic study published this year, the Jewish population in the region grew by 80 percent from 2003 to 2017.
Closing schools on religious holidays is difficult because the First Amendment prohibits the government from establishing an official religion and favoring one religion over another.
Christmas and Thanksgiving are public holidays. School districts have dealt with the problem by scheduling “professional development days” around Rosh Hashanah or other holidays, or closing schools because of the holiday rather than the holiday itself.

If enough teachers take off for, say, the holidays, there may not be enough substitutes to replace them, Siegel said.
“Our area is nowhere like it looked like 15, 20 years ago,” he said. “So what we’re seeing is a wave of initiatives by local school principals to revise their calendars to better reflect the diversity of their student populations. This is consistent with the movement toward greater inclusion and cultural awareness that we’re seeing in society at large. “

Prince William County Public Schools made the decision after sending out a survey. The survey suggested two options for the school calendar. The first was to leave the calendar unchanged. The second is to add four religious holidays and subtract four days from winter and spring vacation.
The results of the survey were presented to the school board on October 21. Then the board asked the school board for a third option. It adds four religious holidays but leaves winter vacation unchanged. The school board approved the route in November.
