The Huntsville School Board on Thursday discussed a proposed scenario for the 2014-2015 school year that restores a week of vacation. The students will have one week of Thanksgiving and two weeks of Christmas vacation.

The order returns the school year to the period before a 2012 state law mandated that school systems begin the academic year no more than two weeks before Labor Day and end the year on the Friday before Memorial Day. The shortened academic term has forced districts across the state to make up the required 180 instructional days by cutting back on time for students and teachers.

The law that shortened the school year expires after this school year, so districts across the state are once again free to design their schools as they wish. Huntsville City Schools officials said Thursday that students in Madison and Madison County will likely face a similar situation.

On Tuesday afternoon, Huntsville City Schools urged the community to tell lawmakers their concerns about a proposed new school calendar for the 2020-21 school year. According to the school district’s post, the calendar is being pushed by state lawmakers.

“We are hearing from Representative Hurst and Senator David Sessions who are introducing a bill to mandate a state calendar. In the past, a mandated calendar was to increase tourism and increase revenue in the Gulf Coast area,” said Huntsville City Schools District 3 Board Member Elisa Ferrell.

However, this proposed mandated calendar would start students a month later and there would be no breaks between the months of January and May.

“An imposed calendar that starts after Labor Day, especially since Labor Day is late this year and ends before Memorial Day really cuts into their year,” Ferrell said.

Huntsville City Schools is encouraging the community to call their legislators and express their concerns about a proposed provision that would significantly change school calendars and school hours.

Huntsville City Schools has posted an image of a proposed statewide school calendar for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. If the proposed calendar is adopted, Alabama students would begin classes on Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day.
