Aiken County Public Schools is exploring ideas for a revised school calendar and has created an anonymous survey to gauge interest and get parent feedback.

Georgetown County students may see more disruption in the future, but the school district plans to return to school early as it plans its academic calendar for the next two years.

GEORGETOWN — Georgetown County students could see more vacation days, but start school over the next two years under proposed changes to the district’s academic calendar.
Regional human resources director Chelice Waites told the school board at a Jan. 18 meeting that the calendar-scheduling committee had seen other school districts in South Carolina move to a modified year-round format and wanted to follow suit.

The revised year-round schedule would allow eight more weeks of summer vacation and students would still be required to attend 180 days of class, but the number of days would be higher throughout the year.
The main difference between the two calendars is that students take a week off every quarter. Traditionally, students spend one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and one week for spring break.
Students now have one week off in October, November and April, and usually two weeks off for the modified version of Christmas throughout the year.

Beginning with the 2023-24 school year, teachers will begin on July 26 and students will return to school on August 2. The last day of the school year is December 20 and the school year ends on May 24.

To transition to the new schedule, the district is planning a bridge year for 2022-23, which will be similar to the existing calendar, but with teachers and students returning to school earlier than in the past.
