Fusd Calendar 21 22 – Irvington’s new bell schedule includes two block days compared to four days this year, while FLEX remains two days a week.
In the week before spring break, Irvington High School’s bell schedule for the 2022-2023 school year was finalized based on the results of a staff vote. The new schedule includes 2 blocks and 3 counseling days, with the ticket and lunch remaining 8 minutes and 35 minutes respectively. The first day of school will not be a minimum day and will start at 8:30am. This decision was made mainly at the request of maths and English teachers, who felt that two blocks forced them to cram more lessons into one day, meaning that students were less engaged with the subject. The schedule also gave them less time to help struggling students. “I feel like I don’t have the opportunity to follow my students that much,” said Liz O’Connor, an 11th-grade Advanced College Prep English teacher. “I’ll give a lesson and find out I have to get over something and then I don’t see them for two days or I don’t see them again until the next week. It is very important for students who are struggling to be able to continue to build on what they have been working on.” The students, however, disagree. Many felt that the 4-day block schedule was more beneficial because it gave them more time between classes, which resulted in more time for homework. “The teacher could tell me on Tuesday that we have an exam on Thursday, and then I would have all the time between Tuesday and Thursday to study for that exam,” said Ayush Patel (11). “Also, long advisors are very good at doing a lot of work.” Additionally, 3 counseling days were voted out of 4 FLEX days because staff members felt that counseling serves to make real connections between students and teachers.” “I think most [teachers] prefer counseling to FLEX because you build a relationship with the students, unless both parties are present. ready to build that relationship,” said Algebra 1 teacher and Mr. Johnson, Precalculus. “I invite students to ask me questions about math, but in general, I think students like to relax and take a break from the stress of school life here at Irvington, so I’m really looking forward to that. ” However, most students favored FLEX periods because they offer students more flexibility compared to advisory courses. Students found FLEX to be much more practical in developing relationships with their teachers. “I could choose the teachers I wanted to go to if I wanted more help with a concept,” Michael Zheng (11) explained. “With the advisor, the work period was helpful, but I think it would be more practical to have a FLEX work period to give students more freedom.” Other teachers, such as science teachers, benefited from this year’s schedule. Mrs. Koehler, an AP biology and environmental science teacher, explained, “I feel like it’s given me more flexibility as a science teacher to facilitate the labs.” The 90-minute classes allowed time for longer and more complex laboratory exercises that could not be completed on normal days. The four periods of blockade also took their toll on teachers. “I felt like if I had more block days, I had more pressure to entertain my class, which was kind of exhausting.” Although students believe that the change back to two block days per week will be unfavorable, most teachers agree that students will adapt accordingly to the upcoming schedule.
