The motion to approve the Fairfax County Public Schools calendar was supported by all school board members, but Ricardo Anderson and Megan McLaughlin abstained. The calendar sets the first day of school as August 22 and the last day as June 16, 2023.
New changes to the calendar include adding the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur and the Hindu festival of Diwali as holidays. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year holiday, will be a professional workday on September 26. Orthodox Good Friday will become a professional working day on April 14. Good Friday, celebrated by Catholics and many Protestants, as well as Theravada Buddhists, occurs during Spring Break, April 3-7.
The other three days — the Muslim holidays of Eid-ul-Azha and Eid-ul-Fitr and the Lunar New Year holiday celebrated in East Asian countries — are non-school days for the 2022-23 academic year.

In this academic year’s calendar, Yom Kippur, Orthodox Good Friday, and Diwali are designated as religious and cultural observances and not rest days for students. However, Fairfax County Public Schools may not schedule tests, quizzes, field trips, graduations, homecoming or sporting events on this anniversary.
When developing the calendar, FCPS must consider state and federal law, superintendent priorities, state guidelines for community feedback, and school board feedback.
“I want to thank our community for participating in the development of this calendar,” said Stella Pekarcsi, School Board Chair and Surrey District Representative. “This calendar is a collaborative effort between staff, students, families and our community and truly supports our strategic plan goals of student success, a caring culture, a first-class workforce and resource management.”

For the 2022-23 school year, new guidelines are available for days designated as Memorial Day or “O-Day.” Tests, quizzes and tryouts that cannot be rescheduled, as well as sporting events and other school events and activities, will be prohibited on Memorial Day.
Occasions still designated as celebrations are Day of the Dead (November 1–2), Bodhi Day (December 8), Three Kings/Epiphany (January 6), Orthodox Christmas (January 7/weekend), Orthodox Epiphany (January 19) and Ramadan (Sunset March 22 to April 21, celebrated on March 23).
Families from different religious and cultural backgrounds favor adding Jewish, Hindu, and Muslim observances as holidays to the calendar.

“We’re relieved. It’s been a long struggle for justice for marginalized non-Christian religious families,” said Anna Stolley Persky, a Jewish mother of three FCPS students. “As part of the district’s recognition of Fairfax’s diverse community, we ask for our most sacred holiday.”
Added Veterans Day on Nov. 11 as a student holiday and employee workday to the calendar. 14 professional work days are designated for faculty planning and professional development.
In addition to the new holidays, the calendar includes the Labor Day holiday on September 2-5, the Election Day holiday on November 8, the Thanksgiving holiday on November 23-25 and the winter holiday from December 19-January 2, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 16, President on February 20 Day, April 3rd to 7th Spring Break, May 29th Memorial Day and June 19th June 19th, is a staff holiday.
