Fcps 2023 Calendar – Arlington Public Schools Superintendent Francisco Duran has proposed an earlier start to school next fall and more school days than the current school year.
If approved, the 2023-24 calendar would have 180 instructional days for all students and would begin on August 21, 2023. This year, elementary and middle school students have 175 instructional days and high school students 174 days, falling behind the state average. 180 day standard and pre-pandemic APS calendar.

The proposal comes after APS received more than 7,100 responses from families and employees in a survey earlier this fall that gauged approval of the current calendar and asked for input on three possible calendars for next year. Some respondents urged APS to align its calendar with neighboring jurisdictions, such as Fairfax County Public Schools, while others suggested reducing the number of cultural and religious holidays to bring to the upcoming School Board meeting this Thursday.
Odd/even Day Calendar
“It’s important to coordinate with neighboring districts for holidays and start days…so that our schools are fully staffed with your teachers,” said one respondent to each presentation.
Another said they “support the spirit of inclusiveness, but don’t support APS accepting so many religious holidays.”
Duran’s proposal has the same start date for students as the proposed or approved calendars for many neighboring jurisdictions, with the exception of FCPS, which does not appear to have a proposal yet.
First Day Of School
Duran’s calendar begins a full week in advance with the preferences of multiple survey participants and a calendar committee consisting of a group of principals, PTA members, teachers union representatives and central office staff. It also has the longer winter break of the two calendars.
The school board will receive more information about elective and alternative calendars on Thursday. A vote on Duran’s proposed 2023-24 calendar is then scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 15.
The proposed increase would mark a return to aspects of the pre-pandemic calendar, something the watchdog group Arlington Parents for Education has advocated since last year. It says this is a way to address the focal point of his learning loss.

“Abandoning our long-standing commitment to provide at least 180 school days, especially given the historic learning loss APS students face, is the wrong approach,” the group said in a recent calendar analysis. “Our students deserve to have their school system return to its historic practice of meeting Virginia state standards for both the 180-day and 990-hour standards.”
Over the past 10 years, APE said, 181 days has become the norm for student attendance days. He said APS fell below 180 days during the 2020-21 school year at the start of the outbreak and has not since returned to 180 days.
A few years ago, APS started the school year before Labor Day after former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam allowed school to start up to two weeks before September break.

“Despite the change, APS tends to start later than neighboring sectors,” the group said. “The result is fewer school days for Arlington children.”

Beginning in the 2021-22 school year, APS also added four non-Christian religious holidays, a move some survey respondents opposed.

The proposed 2023-24 calendar would mark Yom Kippur (September 25) and Eid al-Fitr (April 10). APS takes days off for Rosh Hashanah and Diwali this fall, but it’s not on next year’s calendar, probably because it’s scheduled for the following fall weekend.
“A look back at 10 years of calendar history and a comparison of the current APS calendar to our neighboring calendars shows that whether it’s an earlier start, a later finish, the use of federal holidays or a different pattern around winter break, APS has; options on how it can be met within 180 days,” APE said.
Duran proposed 31 days off for federal holidays, winter holidays and religious holidays, as well as evaluation and reporting days.
