Two options were available; the first option was chosen. It includes an intermediate enrichment week for students who may need an extra push. A week is set aside for this in October.

It also includes a Christmas holiday from December 23 to January 6. John Prezas, the school’s executive director, said it’s important to gather input from the community.

“We had a lot of feedback on the calendar, we had two options available to the community, one option was a break in the spring and one was in the fall. The winter break is the difference between the two options. The first option was ultimately chosen” , he said.
Families and teachers were concerned about the proposal to extend the time for the school year; that was not included due to input from families and teachers.

The Corpus Christi ISD Board of Trustees on Monday approved a “year-round” system for the 2020-21 school calendar in preparation for school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic or other natural disasters.
Students can fall nearly a year behind school in math and reading after a few months of homeschooling, according to the Texas Education Agency. That’s why TEA recommends school districts create recess calendars for the upcoming school year.

These calendars include an earlier start date, a later end date, and breaks throughout the year that can be used for closures due to COVID-19 outbreaks, academic support for students in need, and assembly days in bad weather.
The new calendar has a start date of August 13 and an end date of June 3. Intermediate session weeks are scheduled for September 28-October 2, January 19-22, and June 7-11.
The calendar adds five minutes to the schedule for all campuses over two days (equivalent to 960 minutes of instruction), and spring break aligns with Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and Del Mar College calendars.

Each classification period lasts six weeks, with the exception of the fifth classification period, which will last seven weeks. The calendar also includes three on-campus professional development days.
The board chose from four calendar options planned by administrators based on feedback from teachers and parents. The only vote against the calendar came from Trustee Marty Bell.
Like CCISD’s current calendar, the new calendar includes 174 days of instruction, allowing more days for professional development. Bell argued that the number should be closer to 180 to give children more time with teachers.

Superintendent Roland Hernandez responded that the calendar commission used that number of days because it was “a starting point that we know.” He added that new state education requirements require more training and have asked teachers for more time to study.
The board-approved calendar had the latest start date of four options. Hernandez said this was in part to ease the transition for families who were used to starting school in late August and had planned for the holidays.
Some aspects of the calendar, such as days off and the number of minutes in the daily schedule, are subject to change, said board secretary Kathryn Sasser, but an important step was setting a start and end date for the year.

“It’s just the nature of the beast (that) we don’t know what’s going to happen next year,” Sasser said. “But we know our parents and teachers need reassurance on day one — do you know when that will be?”
Also at the meeting, the board approved the construction of an 11th grade wing at Barnes Elementary using money left over from the 2016 bond and a contract with Gignac Architects.
Barnes Elementary School will be outgrown by at least two classrooms next year as construction ramps up on the south side next year, according to construction project manager John Dybala. The new wing replaces four movable classrooms.

The board also brought up an item with a staggering price tag: the purchase of more than $1.1 million worth of contactless hand sanitizer dispensers for all campuses and district departments.
The $1.1 million covers 400 hand sanitizer stands, 400 sanitizers, and reusable tubes for the entire school year. The items have already been ordered and will arrive by the end of July, a district headquarters official said at a meeting on Monday.
Bell estimated that works out to nearly $2,900 for a hand sanitizer stand. It was unclear how often to replace the batteries in each stand; Assistant Board Secretary Alice Upshaw Hawkins said this could be another expense.

According to Hernandez, the contactless stations are not designed to replace sanitizers in classrooms, but to be placed at building entrances and cafeterias. He said contactless stations are being used at the Cabaniss Athletic Complex for graduation.
“I think it’s proactive at the moment, but we can certainly reevaluate it,” Hernandez said. “That’s what guided us in the state, which is all about hand sanitizer in schools where there are so many kids.”

Dr. Nancy Vera is the president of the local chapter of the American Federation of Teachers. The biggest change for teachers, she said, will be semester breaks and extra days for teachers to make up grades.
“We have discussed three options with CCISD and our discussions this morning indicate that there will be a fourth option,” said Dr. Vera. “Some teachers were concerned that one of the mentorships was too late in the year, so they’re going to introduce a fourth option and move one of the mentorships to the beginning of the year.”
Dr. Vera added that intercessions are breaks between semesters that can also be used for enrichment and remedial help for students. She said she hopes the school board gets input from parents before making a decision.
